Week 1 brought us some exciting football games with tons of hard hits and great NFL action. Unfortunately, some of those hits had some costs. Let’s go around the league and point out some of the major injuries and other newsworthy events.
The San Diego Chargers lost Defensive Tackle Jamal Williams for the season as he was placed on IR with a Triceps injury. Williams plays the Nose position in the 3-4 and will be a major blow to the Chargers defense.
The New England Patriots have ruled Linebacker Jarod Mayo and Cornerback Terrance Wheatley out for this weeks AFC East battle against the Jets. Mayo is a huge loss as he was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008.
San Diego also scratched LaDainian Tomlinson from action this week as his sprained ankle hasn’t healed enough to allow him to play. Darren Sproles will get the bulk of the carries as the Ravens head to town.
In Tampa Bay, leading receiver Antonio Bryant will not play this week as he recovers from a knee injury. He did not travel with the team and is staying in Florida to rehab.
Fred Smoot of the Washington Redskins is listed as Questionable this week with an injured rib. The Skins face the Rams so it would be wise to let Smoot heal up this week as the Rams passing attack isn’t exactly electric.
Speaking of ribs, Donovan McNabb is listed as doubtful this week against the Saints with a broken rib. McNabb was injuried after scoring a touchdown as a defender crashed into his back breaking a rib. Rib injuries are slow to heal as they can’t be put in a cast like other bones. The Eagles would be wise to let McNabb rest up early so the injury doesn’t linger.
The Buffalo Bills signed Terrence McGee to a contract extension but may not get to use his services this week as he recovers from back spasms.
Tom Coughlin said that Chris Canty will not play against his old team as he is suffering from a calf injury. Canty is one of the many talented D’ Lineman on the Giants roster who should be able to get along without him for a week while he recovers.
Giants safety Kenny Phillips will be a game time decision with a knee injury. He was a limited participant in practice this week.
Indianapolis Colts Wide Receiver Anthony Gonzalez will miss up to 8 weeks as he recovers from torn ligaments in his knee. Gonzalez was injured in what appeared to be a fluke play, his knee gave as he was untouched running off the line after the snap.
Congratulations are in order for Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Chris Carter, Tim Brown, Herschel Walker and Andre Reed as they were added to the Preliminary list of Hall of Fame possibilities. I think it’s safe to say that Rice and Smith are locks while guys like Carter and Brown may have to wait a year or two. The Hall voters are funny about adding more than one guy at one position unless they are locks.
Check back next week as we give you the Skinny on the post Week 2 news, notes and tidbits from around the league.
