On Monday Jeremy Shockey made the biggest play of the season for the Panthers and the season hasn’t even started yet.
He saved teammate Ben Hartstock from choking. Both players were having a meal, when a piece of meat happened to get lodged in Hartsock’s throat where he was unable to breath. After drinking a glass of water, it still did not pass.
Mike McCartney, Hartsock’s agent spoke on the matter.
“He said, ‘Shockey came up and gave me the Heimlich Maneuver and out came the meat,’ ”
Hartsocks agent called to check up on Ben and Hartsock played down the seriousness of the matter.
Panthers offensive tackle Geoff Schwartz,
“He jacked him up. It was truly amazing,” Schwartz wrote.
Immediately after, some of the team athletic trainers arrived on the scene.
“Ben so downplayed it that I didn’t realize the seriousness of it from his version,” McCartney said. “But the Panthers said it was quite scary.
“He was completely fine after that. He practiced, no problem. I guess that’s when they started teasing him. ‘Don’t choke today, Hartsock.’ ”
The 31-year-old Shockey, a four-time Pro Bowler, is heading into his first season with the Panthers after spending three seasons with the Saints. Hartsock, 31, was also an offseason acquisition by the Panthers after spending two years with the Jets.

Although some critics have spoken on Cam Newton’s predicted struggles, the opposite may be occurring. Cam Newton has proven early to Coach Rivera he means business, at least for now, according to the Charlotte Observer.
After two full go practices Rivera spoke about Newton.
“I mean, he does some things that really light you up and get you excited, as Jimmy did,’’ Rivera said. “Jimmy made some good throws and some good decisions. But when you look at what Cam does, some of those things. His running ability is special. That’s one of the things he brings to the table.’’
“Wow,” was Ron Rivera’s one-word response to the newspaper, when asked to give his early impressions of Newton.
Pundits are speculating that the number one overall pick could be the starter headed into the season. Jimmy Clausen struggled early and often last season as a rookie and the Panthers have also brought in veteran Derek Andersen to compete with Newton.
The one major thing that sets Newton apart from the other Panthers QB’s, is his athletic ability, that will factor into his early success. Extending plays may be Newton’s main option to ease him into the NFL and perhaps winning the starting job.

If Stanford’s redshirt sophomore QB Andrew Luck decides to take his services to the NFL the Carolina Panthers will be waiting with open arms. According to two high-ranking team officials Carolina will pull the trigger.
Luck had a phenomenal season this year which ended Monday night, after a huge Orange Bowl victory. Luck has until the 15th of January to declare if he will enter the NFL draft. The Panthers organization remains optimistic that he will turn pro, even though there are reports saying that Luck may choose to stay in college for another season.
At the present time Luck is mostly viewed as the top pick in the country by most draft experts, apparently the Panthers think the same. Team officials said they wouldn’t even consider trading down if Luck was available for the taking.
Its been rumored that Jim Harbaugh and Luck could be a two in one deal. However, owner Jerry Richardson said the team has not had any contact with Harbaugh about coaching the Panthers.
Right now the Panthers have their targets on San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Panthers officials said they haven’t fully ruled out candidates from the college ranks as of yet, but most likely they would like to hire an NFL coordinator.
