Clinton Portis: Head Over Heels for the G-Men

In the month of February, it was a time when love was in the air for the rest of the nation, for the Redskins and 29 year old Portis…not so much.
The Redskins took one look at the 8.3 million dollar salary and the injury history of Clinton Portis and called it a day. In the last two seasons with the Skins, Portis has only managed to play in 13 games.
In 2011 he’s ready to show and prove, and when healthy, we all know what he’s capable of. The interesting twist to all of this, Portis would like the opportunity to prove it to the Redskins twice a year by playing with the Giants if the opportunity arrives.
On Tuesday on Sirius XM NFL he called an opportunity at RB with the Giants a “outstanding” possibility.
“I would love that opportunity,” Portis said, via Comcast SportsNet Washington and RealRedskins.com.
Currently the Giants have Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs as the focus at RB and a pretty solid offensive unit. The possibility of the Giants signing Portis could be slim, however Portis thinks differently.
“I just need to be able to come out and show what I’m capable of, I think it’s revitalizing to have an opportunity and still have the drive and still have the hunger to go out and prove people wrong.”
Like any little kid on christmas, Portis has his wish list of teams:
New Orleans Saints drafted Alabama running back Mark Ingram last month
“I thought that would be a match made in heaven,”
He spoke of some of the quarterbacks he would be interested in playing with:
San Diego Chargers Philip Rivers, Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, New England’s Tom Brady, Philadelphia’s Michael Vick, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger
Portis stated that the NFL lockout has helped him by giving him more time to heal.
“I think I’m in better shape today than I was since, probably, my fourth or fifth year in the NFL,” Portis said. “… Now I’m having some freedom and opportunity to go elsewhere and train and do my own thing and recover at my own pace. Usually by now, my back hurts from pushing sleds and doing this and doing that in the offseason program. …
“I’m looking forward to growing completely healed. I’m benching, I’m squatting, I’m running. I feel like I got the speed back that was once dominating and scared so many other opposing teams.”
Clinton Portis: Broncos or Packers is the question

This year Clinton Portis turns “the dirty 30″ and we all know what that means to the NFL in Running back years. Did I forget to mention the 2,230 carries to his name?
When your a running back hitting the age of 30, injury prone or not, teams will have questions being a tad injury prone. The biggest issue is that tag hurts your case for big dollars. Only carrying the rock 54 times last season does not help his case either.
With all that being said if you were in the front office of the Green Bay Packers you could possibly roll the dice. That’s only if Portis were willing to take the back seat and accept his “role”. The positives…he gets to play for a Super Bowl caliber team that could possibly repeat. The only catch here is if he’d have to take minimal money for the opportunity to play for a ring.
Portis has always given it his all and runs crazy hard, hence all the injuries. With Ryan Grant due big dollars and coming off a major ankle injury he could be released. Young stud James Starks is still green(no pun intended) but his upside is huge. Portis at the RB position would add some quality depth. Portis gives the running game instant street cred and for the amount you are paying Grant you could probably get Portis for less.
Starks and Portis with a side of Kuhn makes sense to me vs. last years group especially when last year the Packers were 24th in rushing in 2010. They averaged just 3.8 yards per attempt. Last I checked Portis was a helluva blocker Adding Portis helps Rodgers in the pass game as well, blocking as well as receiving out of the backfield. If Grant isn’t the same you give Portis an opportunity to compete with Starks to be the man in Green Bay. Basically LT 2.0 situation.
With all the talk of Portis in Green Bay you can easily see how Denver could also fit in the picture. With John Fox having the experience with a talented two back system with Deangelo Williams and Jon Stewart in Carolina…Clinton Portis and Knowshon Moreno sure has a nice ring to it doesn’t it.
With Denver struggling at quality running back depth, Portis only helps the situation for the Broncos. Deangelo Williams to Denver buzz has been talked about recently but I believe you might be able to get Portis for cheaper than Williams. No one is going to pay Portis like the Redksins did. If both Portis and Moreno could stay healthy the Broncos could potentially have two potential 1,000-yard rushers in their backfield.
At 29 soon to be pushing 30, Portis teamed with Knowshon Moreno, could be one dynamic duo. With Portis skill set he could be the type of back to get the Broncos over the hump at RB meanwhile mentoring Moreno along the way.
