Donovan McNabb Will Be Released By His Request
By Gayle Saunders

Donovan McNabb will be the new Kyle Orton this week as he’s the latest veteran that’s asked to be released. With teams like Chicago and Texans in need of a veteran starter, I could probably see him playing in the city he grew up in.
McNabb has been granted his release, the only problem he faces is which team will pull the trigger on signing him. Lets just call it the one million dollar gamble here. By asking to be released the Vikings won’t have to pay the leftovers on his current contract.
In this day and age, when he’s been beat out by Rex Grossman, John Beck and rookie Christian Ponder the grass doesn’t look so green. Or does it? While it hasn’t been the best year for McNabb, he’s a pretty positive guy which you gotta admire about him. Others would probably see McNabb’s situation as another stain on his resume, but I’m sure he sees it as an opportunity to live out his childhood dreams if he plays for the Bears.
The most promising part of “Donovan McNabb, The Free Agent QB” is his attractive pro-rated salary which is just under 1.6 million. When you’re a playoff bound team, having a QB under center with playoff experience is beneficial. I don’t think that price should hold back playoff bound teams from pulling the trigger on the savvy veteran.
McNabb is Looking for a Quick Rebound

You know when someone breaks up with someone…they’re always looking to rebound quickly to get their feet back on the ground. Well, take that scenario and apply it to Donovan McNabb’s situation in Minnesota.
Whatever happened last week McNabb needs to forget…the hardest part is the fans and organizations short term memory isn’t built like a football players. But to make a long story short, McNabb needs to prove he can still be an effective NFL quarterback
When the Eagles let McNabb walk it was shock and awe, when the Redskins let him walk it was disbelief. People refused to believe rumors that McNabb’s playmaking days are gone. The tough pill to swallow is McNabb going 7-for-15 and passing for 39-yards against the Chargers. Days like that will get people talking.
The only one who can set the record straight will be the McNabb himself, do I doubt that he will make a comeback. The answer is no. McNabb had a bad game and I believe he will rebound. Right now I can say its just one game, now if this happens this coming weekend we will have to revisit this idea.
McNabb spoke to reporters on Wednesday
“I’m a pro — I’ve been at this stage for a long time,” “It doesn’t matter if I pass for 400 or 500 yards and we lose, it’s still the same feeling. That is the way you have to approach it as a quarterback in this league. You have to have to have short-term memory.”
“Everything that happened last year, I mean they could look at different things. Last year I passed for over 3,000 yards, that’s pretty decent,” McNabb said. “It’s a long season. When this next game ends, they will probably be saying, ‘This is the guys we expected to see.’ “

Just had to say it’s good to have the NFL back. I never really thought they would cancel the season, but just the idea of it makes me quiver. What would I do on Sunday and Monday nights? Work out? Read? Do something productive? Sorry, sitting on my couch in my Cowboys jersey, watching games all day, and eating chicken wings sounds way better. No idea what the long term effects of the strike are, but I hope they figured it out and this new system they agreed on works. Don’t want to go through another one of these when the next CBA expires.

Cam Newton = wow. Not sure who saw that coming. Still not sure if Cam is that good or the Cardinal defense is that bad. Next week should help answer those questions with a match against Green Bay. I’d say its a safe bet that he is one of the top players picked off the waiver wire in your fantasy league this week. ____________________________________________________________________________________________
3.
Speaking of fantasy, thanks Rashard Mendenhall, Arian Foster, and LeGarrette Blount. You’ve all already made me regret playing fantasy this year. Also, the Nate Keading injury should be proof yet again not to waste a pick on a kicker till at least the last round. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Steeler’s Defense was awful and Bills offense was fantastic. 2011 season is off to a weird start. Trend or anomaly? Very hard to tell in week 1 of the NFL. My guess is they both regress back to their norms.

I really hope that Lion offense stays healthy this year. Man they’re explosive and exciting to watch. I felt like they were that sexy preseason hype team that always performs lower than expectations. After watching them play, I think if they stay healthy this team could be the exception to that trend. My apologies to Andre Johnson and Roddy White, but Megatron is the best WR in the NFL right now. Unless Optimus Prime suddenly picks up how to play corner back, no one is stopping Calvin this season, no one. ____________________________________________________________________________________________
6.
Someone let me know where to send flowers to the parents of the Kerry Collins era, because I think it just died in Houston on Sunday. This could get ugly quick for Colts fans, the longer Manning stays out. Frankly, not sure if Peyton missing the season if he isn’t healthy enough is the worst thing. Your team gets a top draft pick and a healthy HOF QB next season. Peyton sitting means there is something seriously wrong with him. I would be worried having him play hurt at this point. This season should at least do one thing, prove just how valuable Manning has been the past decade. ____________________________________________________________________________________________
7.
Chris Johnson… really??? You held out all of camp to get that ridiculous contract, and you rush for 24 yards on 9 carries? Titans fans better hope this was only because of the hold out and that he just wasn’t in game shape yet. Those large contracts for running backs are always scary. I can just see all the of the Chiefs and SeaHawk fans nodding with agreement while they burn their Larry Johnson and Shawn Alexander jerseys. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Looks like Dallas picked up right where they left off last year. Another season opener they completely blow and another set of 4th quarter Tony Romo turn-overs. Losing to the Jets in NY (or should I say Jersey, still bothers me they or the Giants don’t play in their own state) is nothing to be ashamed of, but up 14 in the 4th quarter and losing erases that sentiment. Maybe the Cowboys should implore a closer a la Mariano Rivera. Have Romo play 3 and half quarters and bring in a back up QB specialist to manage the last few drives… As a Cowboys fan, this idea both depresses and intrigues me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

My condolences to everyone who had Cleveland in their suicide pools this week. I did one for the first time this season, and losing in the first week would have depressed the hell out of me. Its basically giving your money away. I got cute and took Arizona at home figuring the lousy Panthers and their rookie QB would be a (drew) breeze to take care of. Cam made sure to keep me cursing at my iPhone sports app. for about 3 hours right up until the last play of the game. I’ll be making my Suicide pool pick of the week every week in this article. Next week I’d suggest going w/ the Saints at home against the Bears. New Orleans hung in pretty well with the Pack on the road this weekend and looked every bit of good as we thought they were. I wouldn’t look too much into the Bears upset win against the Falcons. Week 1 always has some funky outcomes. Drew Brees and company should be able to dispel a team that vastly over achieved last season. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Note to Donovan McNabb, those flowers I sent to the family of Kerry Collin’s career… I have a second batch with your name on it. 2 yards passing in the 2nd half? 39 for the game??!? It’s week 1 and your on a new team so I will hold off sending the flowers for at least a few more weeks, but you have been put on notice, they are ready to be shipped. The only one in Minnesota currently enjoying the McNabb era so far is Christian Ponder. I feel for you Minnesota fans. At least you just gave $100 million dollars to your running back. We all know how those contracts turn out. (See #7)____________________________________________________________________________________________
Random thought:
Is the Middle East part of Europe, Asia or Africa? I feel like if you ask a group of people, everyone will have an answer but no one will really be sure. Did we all just not pay attention during geography that day back in grade school???
Donovan McNabb is On The Move

A trade that has made sense to me for the last two years, might just finally happen. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Vikings have interest in McNabbs services. Currently they’ve talked with the Redskins about bringing McNabb on the Viking’s ship. The catch is, the Vikes would have the rights to restructure Donovan’s contract before bringing him in.
At this moment with the state of McNabb’s relationship with the Shanahans and the Redskins front office, Washington should be lucky to get a fair shake. With time playing a factor, its is highly unlikely a rookie can grasp a new system in 3 weeks. McNabbs value as a proven veteran leader, basically gives his old car a brand new paint job. The only problem is he’ll have to share the car garage with a brand new 2011 porshe aka Chris Ponder ok maybe he’s a Audi.
When the Vikings finally feel like taking out the new Audi for a spin McNabb has got to know he’s got to hand over the keys to Vikings ownership to let them make up their minds when the season takes way.
But you never know with a proven running game, McNabb can have some longevity. He’s never had a work horse like Adrian Petersen to hand the rock off to. If he plays lights out, Ponder could in fact, sit and ponder. (I had to) That would be a great dilemna to have for Vikings fans.
McNabb has to figure out whats more important, getting another shot to a ring or looking for another big payday. Chances are McNabb is looking for somewhere he can compete for a starting role that he wont have to give up right away.
I’ve been saying this for over a year McNabb should and will be playing for the Minnesota Vikings this season.
Fast forward to 5:01 ![]()

Brees wins fan vote to be on Madden 2011 cover

Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees just landed a coveted honor in sports…No its not another Super Bowl Ring or an MVP Trophy . Drew Brees is the new cover model for this year’s edition of the “Madden NFL” video game. Is he scared of the curse? No…he actually believes its “a great way to cap off an amazing year”
“I believe in fate, and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” he said. “But destiny is stronger than any curse, and this team is destined for great things.”
On Thursday EA Sports announced that the New Orleans Saints QB quarterback would be featured on the front of “Madden NFL 11,” Brees, who led the New Orleans Saint to a 31-17 victory over Peyton Manning and the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
The “Madden” cover is one of the most popular honors in sports, even though it has been attached to the much-discussed curse. Such recent stars who were affected by the curse, Troy Polalmalu, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick and Shaun Alexander suffered serious injuries during the seasons that they appeared on the cover.
Brees said he hopes the presence of the Saints’ fleur-de-lis logo on the “Madden” cover “keeps people focused on what happened to New Orleans, and what the people of this city have overcome.”
Brees was chosen by fans who voted online to determine the game’s cover athlete. The other choices were Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. “Madden NFL 11″ will be released by EA Sports on August 10, 2010.
McNabb leads welcoming party for T.O.

Are the one time dynamic duo T.O. and Donovan McNabb back at it again? Its been reported that Donovan McNabb has made it known to Washington’s coaching staff that signing free agent Terrell Owens is something that he would encourage.
Coach Mike Shanahan also made it known that at the moment the Redskins are not actively pursuing Owens. An inside source of the Redskins said that upgrading at the WR position is a priority and they look to be aggressive, but would rather avoid bringing Owens into their locker room if another option can be found. Shanahan’s first minicamp with the Redskins provided some insight that the WR position was a concern. Veterans Jerry Porter, Roydell Williams and Marques Hagans participated, and the team ended up signing Hagans and Williams Monday night. Roydell Williams last played in 2007 with the Tennessee Titans.
It has been said by a source close to McNabb that he and Owens recently talked about the possibility of reuniting while recently shooting an episode for a television show in Los Angeles. The “Pros v. Joes” episode which features McNabb and Owens playing together on the same basketball team. The episode will air on Spike in July.
The one time Superbowl teammates could look to mend fences to find a happy ending to their one time rocky relationship. Football fans stay tuned on this story as its far from over.
