For the entire 2009 regular season and into 2010 we haven’t talked about the story that everyone else has in exhaustion. The main reason is that we really had nothing more to add. Now however, after his marvelous performance against the Dallas Cowboys, Favre has led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship game, and we are going to talk about him and the passion that won’t go away!

He grew up in Mississippi, an athletic young man with a passion for football. He was offered a scholarship from Southern Mississippi and went on to play football there. They wanted him play Defensive Back, he wanted to play Quarterback. He started off his Freshman year as the 7th string QB and slowly worked his way up by showing off a talent that couldn’t be denied. He played in his first game in the second half against Tulane where he had 2 second half TD’s and led the Golden Eagles to a come from behind victory. In his Junior season a few years later, Favre led the Golden Eagles to an improbable upset win over the mighty Florida State Seminoles and a college legend was crowned on the campus of Southern Miss.

Favre has retired twice now but the passion hasn't died!

Heading into his Senior year, Favre was involved in a near fatal car accident. He had flipped his car 3 times and had it come to rest against a tree. He was rescued from the car, rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors would later have to remove 30 inches of his Small Intestine due to internal damage. While in the hospital, Favre recalls sitting with his mother and asking “will I be able to play football again?” His passion for life, family and football was put into perspective. A few weeks later, Favre recovered enough to lead the Golden Eagles to victory over Alabama prompting Coach Gene Stallings to say “You can call it a miracle or a legend or whatever you want to. I just know that on that day, Brett Favre was larger than life.”

After college, Favre was headed for the NFL. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2nd Round of the 1991 Draft. He already had his 1st naysayer. Coach Jerry Glanville did not like the Favre selection and once quipped that it would take a plane crash for him to put Brett in a game. Maybe Glanville wasn’t all wrong with his thoughts of Favre in Atlanta. After all, Brett’s first professional pass was intercepted for a TD and in all his 4 NFL passes in his time with Atlanta, he threw 2 interceptions and 0 completions.

The following offseason Ron Wolf traded away his 19th overall round pick for Brett and off to Wisconsin he headed. Brett played 16 years as a Packer, broke all kinds of records and led his team to a Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots. The following season he brought his team back to the big game only to be defeated by the Denver Broncos in a game that some consider the best Super Bowl of all time.

After a big game vs Dallas, these two are headed to the NFC Championship

After some reflection and time with his family, Brett decided to hang it up. He retired from the Green Bay Packers on March 4th 2008. But this wasn’t the end of Mr. Favre. He returned later that year after a big hubbub and a press fiasco. Many people were annoyed with the big to do over his decisions and before you knew it, Brett was back wearing a New York Jets uniform. He played alright for the Jets, not spectacular but not bad either. After that season Brett called it quits, again.

But the kid inside of Favre, the one that wanted so desperately to play Quarterback for Southern Miss. and the one that found himself laying in hospital bed asking his mother if he would ever be able to play football again, wouldn’t let him stay away. Here we are one year later and Favre finds himself 2 wins away from a Super Bowl Championship. Knocking on the door of greatness once again. See, Favre doesn’t care what the critics, writers and fans say. He plays the game from his heart, with a passion that we’ve never seen rivaled. He knows that his time is fleeting, he knows that life is to be cherished and you have to have fun and enjoy every minute while you still can. So if you find yourself in a conversation about Favre and someone tells you how annoyed they are with all the Favre talk, just know that he’s someone you can root for because he plays for the love of the game just like we used to do when we were kids.
