Pat White, quarterback for the Miami Dolphins suffered a concussion after a helmet-to-helmet hit from Ike Taylor of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Pat White hit turned out to be a viral video for many NFL fans who wanted to see what happened to Pat White, but most importantly NFL fans wanted to know if he was ok.
When a player has a head injury its always of great concern. The worst case scenario is always death, but other issues could include paralysis. A Dolphin’s spokesman said that White suffered a concussion but is “doing good.”
The San Francisco Gate reports “Pat White has been taken to the hospital for observation but seems to be moving okay.” Furthermore, the Associated Press issued a report on helmet safety because of the Pat White injury, stating “Hopefully the helmet testing, the congressional hearings, and the increasing awareness by the NFL players and owners, and the general public, of the short- and long-term dangers of concussions will someday result in a safer game of football”.
Pat White’s concussion and injury happened during the 3rd down and 9 play in the 3rd quarter with 2:05 left on the clock. White tucked the ball away and ran left towards the sideline, as he tried tried to secure a first down. He was then struck by Ike Taylor. White laid still and motionless on the sidelines after the hit, and many feared the worst.
Oddly enough White was also the second quarterback the Dolphins lost during the game, the starter Chad Henne left with an eye injury in the first half, and was unable to return to the game.
UPDATE: Post game Dolphins coach Tony Sparano spoke of White’s condition saying “The information that we have is that he’s doing OK.”
Concussions have been a hot topic around the NFL and this play may bring the issue further into the spotlight. Incidentally, the NFL and House Judiciary Committee will likely meet this week to discuss the use of new helmet designs to reduce head trauma.
It’s great to hear that Pat White is doing fine, its also a reminder to everyone that Football is a collision sport and that these players risk their lives everytime they set foot on the field.
