Locker or Hasselbeck, that is the question!
There is a good Quarterback competition brewing in Nashville as the Tennessee Titans 2nd year QB, Jake Locker and long time Veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck are locked in on a tight contest for the starting job.
Following Saturday nights loss to the Seahawks in Preseason action, Head Coach Mike Munchak said he saw some good thing from Locker, who finished 7 for 13 adding 80 yards. Hasselbeck went 5 for 9 for 45 yards in the opening series but had 2 interceptions, the first one coming on the very first throw of the game and the last one coming on his final pass before giving way to the 2nd year QB.
“We need to be sharper. The first play of the game you never want to start with an incompletion, never mind a turnover, never mind a turnover for a touchdown,” Hasselbeck said. “It was one of those things where I saw it happening like it was in slow motion and I was just like, ‘No.’ . But, yeah, it happened, and it was disappointing.”
Word out of Titans Camp this offseason was that Locker was closing the gap on winning the starting job but Coach Munchak isn’t ready to name anyone just yet.
“I want to name a starter as soon as we’re ready to name him. We’re not looking at the calendar. There’s obviously deadlines and one has to be named by a certain time,” Munchak said. “The sooner we make it the better as we go through the process. We’re not really giving ourselves a deadline. I’m not looking at it that way. We’re just kind of moving forward like we have been.”
THE SKINNY: The team is going to put themselves in the best position to win the AFC South and will likely decide shortly who that will be. My guess is that if the Titans falter early than Locker, if he’s not starting initially, will take over the job for good. He’s a high 1st Round pick and you have to turn the reigns over to him eventually, the big question is when will that be? Not sure anyone knows at this point, even the Titans coaching staff.
