Pierce tells newspaper that Giants have released him

Giants LB Antonio Pierce took it upon himself and e-mailed the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger on Thursday and said that he had been released.
The New York Giants will announce the move soon, according to the Star-Ledger.
Pierce who is 32, was the Giants’ defensive captain and had been with the franchise for five seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in the 2006 season, when he made a career-high 137 tackles, but he struggled with injuries this past season and played in just nine games.

Pierce, who started his NFL career in 2001 with the Redskins, had one season remaining on the contract he signed as a free agent in 2005. He has 686 tackles, nine sacks and seven interceptions in his career.
“I’m doing great, feeling great,” Pierce wrote in his e-mail to the paper. “Looking forward to endless possibilities. Loved every moment as a NY GIANT.”
