If you CAN beat em…Join em, and that is exactly what the recently fired Dolphins head coach did. Tony Sparano is now a part of the New York Jets coaching staff.
If there is one coach familiar to teams that need a turnaround, it would be Tony Sparano. He had the fortune of inheriting a 2008 Dolphins team, that was 1-15 and he eventually took them to the playoffs.
His next adventure starts in New York and will have a full task ahead of him, trying to fix the engine of the Jets Offense, as their new offensive coordinator. After 6 years with Brian Schottenheimer, the jets have parted ways hoping Sparano helps the Jets do what they do best. Can you say run the ball and pass protect?
The Jets have let other notable coaches walk such as offensive line coach, Bill Callahan and wide recievers coach Henry Ellard. It was reported that Sparano had an eye for the Jets offensive coordinator position as soon as he was released.
“When we sat down with Tony, I knew that he was the right person at the right time for our offense,” Ryan said in a statement. “I’ve admired his work as a competitor in the division for the past three seasons. His teams were always physical, tough and hard-nosed.”
The Jets are building the puzzle and looking for the right coaches that fit. Their next target will be ex Chiefs coach Todd Haley, who has roots with the Jets, and Sparano and Haley go back together from their days with the Cowboys.
It was just a short time ago that Rex Ryan told the media that he didn’t plan to change his coaching staff, and now look at the amount of changes. It makes you think that, it was either someone elses doing or maybe he was forced into making some offensive staff changes asap.
Sparano will inherit an offense that underacheived, and a Jets team whose lockeroom fell apart at the inseams. Lets hope in 2012 he can get the running game back to form and his Quarterback and receivers all on the same page.
